COVID-19 Update 2
Arco Ministries Newsletter Update
Arco’s Response to COVID-19 and a Community Update from Cuenca.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the government response to help keep Ecuadorians safe, the country of Ecuador closed its borders and began a country-wide quarantine on March 15, 2020. The government has since enforced strict guidelines, including a 2:00pm curfew for all residents and visitors of Ecuador.
Some of the rules of the quarantine are as follows: (1) There is only one day of the week that you are allowed to use your car, (2) Only one designated member of each family can enter grocery stores, and (3) The local tiendas (neighborhood stores) are open if necessary but are also restricted by the 2:00pm curfew. Public transportation has become extremely limited as there are very few taxis running, and no busses at all. The outer-city limits have been closed to prohibit all travel between cities. Also, all schools and colleges have shifted to online platforms for all lessons and assignments for the remainder of the school year.
There is a strange feeling surrounding the city as the once lively streets are now completely silent.
Arco Church’s Sunday services are now being streamed through Facebook Live and transmitted through the church’s radio station. Many of the home groups are still meeting via various online platforms as well.
Many people are out of work here in Cuenca! Currently, one of the biggest needs is to help the poverty stricken Ecuadorians and Venezuelan Refugees. Many of whom were previously street vendors and are now out of work and no longer have an income. This has left many families in desperate need. Arco is trying to help as many as we can.
We are currently helping over 165 Ecuadorian and refugee families to the best of our ability.
We have received many donations from our church members and community to assist those in need. Volunteers have picked up the donated items, made food baskets, and delivered them to each family’s home.
Our church has always been characterized by helping the community with their spiritual as well as their physical needs. This is a challenging time, and the need is so great, but we know that God has His plan and purpose! We are encouraged in knowing that right now is the best time to be a Christian as it allows us to share the good news, give hope, and be light in a dark season!
We could not do any of this without you. Thank you for all your continued prayers and support!
